You should avoid these hair trends!
Hair trends that can really damage your hair (and your extensions).
The internet is full of countless tips, DIY hacks, and viral haircare trends – but not everything hyped on social media is actually good for your hair. This is especially true if you have hair extensions or thickening treatments.
Today we'll show you 5 popular hair trends that do more harm than good to your hair structure – and especially to your tape-in extensions.
1. Don't leave hair masks on dry hair for hours (or sleep with them on)!
The idea behind it: the longer the exposure time, the better.
The reality: Hair masks are designed to be applied to damp hair – because only then is the cuticle open and ready to absorb the product.
What happens if it is used incorrectly? The mask dries out on the hair, drawing out moisture instead of providing it – the result: dry, dull hair and an increased risk of breakage.
Here's how to do it right: Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo (e.g., our ᴺ1 Daily Routine Shampoo), squeeze out the excess water with a towel, and apply the ᴺ2 Ultimate Hair Mask to the lengths and ends. 5–15 minutes is all it takes. Finally, rinse the mask out.
2. Use conditioner before shampoo or hair mask.
A common misconception. First shampoo, then mask, finally conditioner – this order is crucial for your hair care to be effective, because:
- Shampoo – cleanses the hair and opens the cuticle.
- Hair mask – intensively nourishes and moisturizes your hair
- Conditioner – seals the cuticle layer and ensures suppleness
If the conditioner is used first, it blocks the absorption of nourishing ingredients from the mask. This is especially detrimental to extensions that no longer receive nutrients through the roots.
The ideal order is and remains: shampoo, hair mask & then conditioner.
For extra protection and smoothness, we recommend following up with a leave-in treatment like our ᴺ4 Spray: It smooths the hair structure, makes your hair easier to comb and reliably protects it from external influences such as UV rays or heat.
Finally, a light hair oil – like our ᴺ5 Daily Oil Elixir – provides radiant shine and helps retain moisture in the hair. This way, your hair not only stays nourished but also looks healthy and shiny all day long.
3. Dry shampoo – practical help or hair killer?
Dry shampoo is a practical helper for hectic days, but if used incorrectly, it can become a real hair problem.
What many people don't know: Dry shampoo forms a film on the scalp, absorbs oil – but clogs the pores with frequent use. This can lead to itching, dandruff, faster oiliness, or even hair loss.
Here's how to use it correctly:
- Use only sparingly at the base of the spine, not over the entire area.
- Use for a maximum of one day to bridge the gap between hair washes – then rinse thoroughly.
- Use the ᴺ0 Deep Cleansing Shampoo when washing your hair to completely remove residue.
Dry shampoo is a temporary solution – not a substitute for a proper hair wash.
4. Washing hair with dish soap – please never again!
Using dish soap on greasy hair? It might remove grease – but it damages everything else.
Why this is dangerous: Dish soap is far too harsh for our scalp and hair structure. Even if individual ingredients sound similar to those in shampoos, the pH value, composition, and effect are completely different.
Consequences:
- Dry, dull hair
- Irritated, tight scalp
- Disrupted protective barrier
- In the long term, this can even lead to hair breakage and scalp problems.
Our tip: Opt for a professional deep cleansing shampoo like our ᴺ0, which removes styling residue without disrupting the scalp's balance.
5. Spraying perfume in your hair – fragrant, but harmful
A touch of your favorite fragrance in your hair sounds romantic – but it will hurt your hair! Perfumes contain high amounts of alcohol, which draws moisture from your hair, making it dry, brittle, and prone to breakage over time. Extensions are especially sensitive, as they no longer have their natural protective barrier.
Our tip: If you don't want to forgo the fragrance in your hair, you should definitely protect your hair lengths beforehand with a hair oil (e.g., our ᴺ5 Daily Oil Elixir) or a leave-in spray. The oil forms a gentle protective film over your hair and prevents the alcohols in the perfume from penetrating the hair structure.
Alternatively, we recommend special hair mists that are alcohol-free and specifically developed for use in hair – for fragrant hair, without any damage.
Conclusion
Not every viral hack is good for your hair – on the contrary: many supposed tips are not only ineffective, but also harmful to your hair structure in the long term, and especially to your real hair extensions.
If you use professional hair care products and tailor your routine to the needs of your hair, your hair will remain healthy, shiny and beautiful in the long term.
